"Two-To-Three" 2007-07-03

I'm not sure where they get off on the "two-to-three-people" thing, but I'll tell you now that unless you're sleeping with leprechauns, this is not true. It could possibly fit two of you, but it depends how big of an individual you and your tent partner are.

Overall, I love the tent because it does the job and does it well. It's light, easy to set up (took me maybe five minutes, though I am an ex-boy scout), and fits in a relatively small bag. I currently have it in a compression bag with my atlas and road maps fastened under my Alice Pack.

This is a very nice tent. I find the quality to be good and it's made it through a few storms without any problems. You can find this tent for a very good price if you do some searching.

What I like about the tent: inexpensive, light aluminum poles and stakes, appears to be well made, perfect for one person plus gear when car camping, the roof vent is nice for hot days, the color and design are attractive, mimics quite closely the much more expensive MSR Zoid design, pockets inside to hold things, the included guy rope is a nice touch, fitted footprint available for purchase, two doors and vestibules for two people.

What I don't like: biggest complaint is that it's noticeably heavier than the Zoid, it's a bit of a tight fit for two people, it takes a while to set up because of all the stakes that must be put in, it is not freestanding and requires a lot of good ground to put all of the stakes in, doesn't have the option for the fly and footprint only, it fits VERY loosely in the included bag, which means you can't compress it as much as you might like when backpacking, footprint doesn't fit quite as well as I would expect.

That last item shouldn't be as important, since most backpacks have straps that compress the pack contents. If you actually use this tent for two people when backpacking then the load should be fairly light. Just realize your gear will have to be in the vestibules and you should be comfortable sleeping fairly close to each other.

"Almost Perfect!!! (but not quite)" 2009-11-11

Just got done with my 1st trip using this tent today, and have a few observations that I hope can help those thinking of purchasing one.

1st, never believe the weatherman!!! Decided to take a nice overnight fall foliage drive w/camping and the forecast called for partly cloudy with 30% chance of rain yesterday then clearing to mostly sunny with 20% chance today......well, it started a light shower at 1st around 9pm last night, then a steady moderate downpour developed soon later that lasted for over 24hrs strait without letup till 3pm today. Thank goodness the tent did not develop any leaks, but had weeping on the side floor panels just below the non-door window and one side wall that actually caused water to trickle down into a corner of the tent, not alot given the conditions we were in, and was managed by using a couple spare socks. Thank god we had an air mattress or we would have got wet.

2nd, you must realize that rarely is any tent perfect out of the box. As what i did was just that. Strait from the box to the set-up. The problem i noticed is the poly oxford floor is durable yes, and has a good interior coating. But due to its more porous fabric, really needs an exterior coating to shed water better, as the rain saturated the fabric, and eventually permeated the coating. All of the seams held tight, quality of fit/finish/and fabric were 100% and the fly worked perfectly!!! Just do yourself a favor and pick up a can or 2 of your favorite waterproof spray and use it to coat the entire outside floor tub.

3rd, more of a general gripe to the manufacture to make this tent as close to perfect as one can get, but do not detract from the ratings in any way. Need a way to attach the fly to the poles to make the entire structure more sturdy. Provide the extra quy-out lines w/stakes you so recommend in foul weather, and to make things simple, just produce all your Timberline tents as 2door models!!!!! (for the life of me I can't figure out why Eureka's top-line 4man Timberline is not offered in a 2door style)

"The Outfitter is superb!!" 2009-09-28

Used this within a few days after receiving it. It rained for over 26 hours-constantly (sometimes heavy thunderstorms)and NOT one leak! I did use seam-sealer on the floor exterior seam and all exterior seams on the tent and fly prior to using it (as many experts do recommend doing every few years with any tent). The tent has a LOT of room for one person and gear and plenty for two people with gear. From what I have read and researched the "Outfitter" has thicker material and flooring vs. other Timberline tents and I am VERY glad I paid the extra money for this one. Believe me, I AM TOTALLY SOLD ON THIS TENT!! I have three tents now but will use this one primarly for solo backpacking. It is very well made, light-weight, secure and I KNOW now it's water-tight. It is VERY easy and quick to put up- anyone can do it in a super-fast manner! I quickly (and involuntarily) tested it with buckets of rain coming down on it. Can not recommend it enough. Get it!!

"Eureka Timberline 4 person tent" 2009-08-16

I am very pleased with the Eureka tent and am looking forward to using it during our October foliage season. We purchased a 3 season tent last year to do some fall camping in western Massachusetts, but there was so much mesh siding in the tent that the outside air temperature was the same inside the tent. Even though we were using down bags, we were miserable when the night temps dropped to the 30's. I have camped extensively in Colorado in the same temps (or lower) and not been uncomfortably cold in tents such as the Eureka that allow the mesh openings to be zippered shut. Four season 4-person tents from REI or EMS were priced about $200 more than the Eureka--much more than I wanted to pay to occasionally go car camping on a weekend. The Eureka is quick & simple to put up, and one person can do this. I watched my camping companions struggling to bend the poles just right to put up their dome tent--a two person project. The others had a tent (high end brand) that was like assembling an erector set. We were done setting up our Eureka in just a few minutes and didn't have to struggle to do it. We chose the option of having the more heavy duty floor and zippers and have not had any problems.

"Why Timberline?" 2009-04-23

There are many reviews on the long-lived Timberline series and the Outfitter model features. The toughness, durability, reliability, and weather resistance of the tent is well established, so the question is why choose the a-frame Timberline instead of one of the alternatives? The 3 and 4-man alternatives I looked at were: inexpensive tents (under $150), high-quality ultralight tents (Bibler, Black Diamond, and Eureka for example), outfitter-class dome tents (Eureka Assault Outfitter), large recreation tents (Copper Canyon and Cougar Flats) and walled tents. Each tent has fitness for a different purpose, and my purpose was to suit my family of four with two adults and two toddlers for public campground car camping, wilderness car camping, and short backpacking. Here's what I looked at:

For the part-time outdoor travel life, tents are much less expensive than motorhomes, RV's, trailers, and slide-ins. They also take much less land to store when they're not being used and I have a scarce amount of land. Comparatively, I would consider a $1000 tent a bargain, but nobody wants to pay for something they won't use or benefit from, especially if it's actually counter to their criteria (too heavy or too fragile for example). I ruled out walled tents and hardcore mountain tents (Bombshelter) because the cost was so high for something I didn't need and wouldn't use.

Rec tents (Copper Canyon, Cougar Flats) are also fairly expensive, but at least under $500. They're big and comfortable (near vertical walls and standing room), but they're not as tough or durable as Outfitter class tents (Pine Lodge maybe but then you're getting into bigger bucks). Rec tents are also not as weather proof. They're heavy (sometimes as much as 40 lbs) which makes them impractical to backpack with (I would need a two-tent plan). Ultimately, I decided against them because despite their comfort, I see a tent as a necessary evil. I would much rather do without a tent, but when you need one, you need one. No matter how enjoyable a tent is, it's still a tent and I would rather be outside.

Inexpensive tents might seem to fit the bill because I certainly don't want to lavish money on something where I just crawl in and fall asleep. The problem with cheap tents is they fail when you need them most, and they need to be replaced over and over again making the economy false. I expect frequent camping for many years and an Outfitter will outlast a cheap tent more than the price multiple. I need a tent most when it's windy and percipitous and that's when the cheap ones fail. For me, they're no bargain.

I am formerly a hardcore backpacker, and trekker. I also mountaineered in North America. I was an Alpine-style minimalist. Tents were nonsense. I would use at most a bivy sack in the snow or on a glacier or in a rainstorm. I still carried a lot of weight because I needed a lot of food calories for many days. Nevertheless, a man's got to know his limitations. If I had to carry a wife and two toddlers, not even a mosquito net would be light enough. However, within their range, a 10 pound tent is cake.

For my criteria, the other tent I really like is the Eureka Assault Outfitter. It's basically a dome version of the Timberline Outfitter, but it's about $100 and 3 pounds more. Undoubtably it's roomier (as is the Timberline Outfitter 6) but the Timberline Outfitter 4 meets all my needs.

One shortcoming of this tent is that the fly is not freestanding -- it must be guyed out to stakes or it will fall against the tent wall. This is not normally a problem but in deep snow or on solid granite you would have to get creative. The instructions suggest burying gear, using ski poles etc. I believe dome type tents (Assault Outfitter) with pole pockets or clips will hold the fly away from the wall without stakes and guy outs. If I was planning a lot of snow camping, this is not the best tent as the broad walls are also not the best for heavy snow loads. I am sure it would readily suffice for occasional snow use, even deep snow.

Another note is that cord is not included to guy out the tent walls when not using the fly. The fly clips to rings on the wall sides and bungee cords fixed to the fly are pulled out guy the tent to stakes. Without the fly, there's nothing to guy out the sides. The solution is to add your own guy lines. I used bungee balls. Additional guy lines and stakes, possibly heavier ones (if you're not backpacking) will improve the tent. I don't mark it down for not including these because it's an easy thing to solve. The fact that the tent/fly requires stakes to complete the pitching is however, in my opinion, a real shortcoming.

It's a no-frills tent that does what a tent needs to do real well and nothing else -- because ultimately I'm not out there to dwell in a tent.

I got this tent on Amazon for a little under $200 and for that price it is a good tent. My wife and two kids(4 & 7 yrs old) have backpacked with this tent twice already. It hasn't rained hard yet, but so far has been easy to use seems to be well made.

I have used this tent once so far on a backpacking trip. The tent is pretty quick and easy to set up but it is diffucult to get the sag out of it between the large pole and the small pole. After I had the rain fly on I was able to pull the large pole forward and have the rain fly keep it in place. This reduced some but not all of the sag. I may have to add a bungee and another stake to solve this issue. It is a good size for one person. A little bigger would be nice but for backpacking sake you want to keep it small and light. I found that this tent rolled up smaller than the factory description. I experienced very light rain during the night in this tent. I had no moisture issues with rain or condensation. Overall I am pretty satisfied.

"Affordable Quality" 2009-10-05

I am really happy with this tent. The design, craftsmanship, materials and quality all exceeded my expectations for the price. My Zephyr 1's maiden voyage was baptism by snow and wind on Mt. Adams in Wa. St. on October 2nd. This is a 3 season tent but it will keep you warm and dry if you use a well designed insulated sleeping mat like the Exped downmats combined with a good sleeping bag. We "guestimated" the windes at 20-40mph and tempuratures dipped into the low 20's F. I secured the tent with the supplied guy lines and aluminum stakes before turning in for the night and I was glad I took the extra steps. No one really wants to see the wind blowing snow sideways when we go camping. I highly recommend getting the footprint. Search for "floor saver" when trying to find the footprint. The footprint did its job well because the ground did freeze that night and I know it provided an insulating layer as well as protect the floor of the tent. I also liked that you can clip the urethane-coated polyester fly to the floor saver at all four corners.

Very high quality construction, nice packable weight, not bright clown colors, and spacious enough for comfortable extended stays in the field.

This tent is of the same caliber as Eureka, MSR, or Big Agnes, but can be found at a much more reasonable price-point. Set up is fast and easy, and as a free standing tent you have the added ability to pitch in a real hurry if need be. Staked out with the fly in place it was very secure in high winds at 6500 feet. The no-see-um mesh construction makes for excellent ventilation, no condensation issues, and sans fly a wonderful way to sleep under the stars without bugs all over your face. Plenty of room to sit up (I'm 5'11") and change or stretch, and the included gear loft is a nice bonus.

My only "complaint" is the length of the poles when collapsed; the tent can be compressed to very compact size, but the poles are still about 18" when stowed. But that is a minor complaint.

"Great free standing single tent" 2009-02-24

The Zephyr 1 is a great tent. When I was researching a single person tent, I wanted it to be free standing, under four pounds, and at least 36 inches wide. The Zepher 1 had all of these requirements and it is wider and has more head room than expected. I have taken the tent on several multi night packpacking trips and it has performed well. Twice I camped with the tent and it had snowed. There was no leaking and I was very comfortable.

I find there is plenty of room on the inside of the tent for extra clothes & gear. The vestibule is small,and hence the four star rating, but adequate enough for boots and smaller gear. You could store your pack there, but it would be tight. I usually store my pack outside with a waterproof pack cover anyway.

I was willing to pay more for a single person tent, but could find none that fit all my requirements.

"Smaller than expected" 2008-09-01

First, this is a pretty decent tent. I have no complaints about the build quality, and it comes with two mesh pockets and even a gear loft included!

Having said that, I didn't expect it to be quite that small. I'm 6ft/183cm tall and sleeping on a size large Therm-a-Rest Trail Lite mat, the tent was barely long enough for me. I am fairly skinny, yet on the floor on the sides of the mat, there was barely enough space left for most basic necessities like a change of clothes. Your backpack will definitely need to stay outside, and the vestibule is again rather small; not sure if a large backpack and a pair of boots would fit in there.

As another reviewer commented, one must attach the guy ropes to the bottom of the fly on the sides to prevent the fly from touching the body. Since these are required and not merely a high-wind option as in other tents, why aren't they attached permanently to the fly? I already lost one of mine after a week of camping.

On the advice of someone who owns a fleet of tents for commercial use I purchased this tent from the Alps Company. It was about $80 less than comparable freestanding solos from MSR, Big Agnes, and Mountain Hardwear. Despite the price difference, this tent is of the same quality as far as materials, workmanship, and design go. I was under the impression that Alps just copied others designs and that they saved their money in R&D. But this tent disproves that. The design is extremely practical. They took a simple timeless design with the two crossing poles and made a huge improvement to it just by adding an elbow resulting in more headroom where your head goes rather than in the middle of the tent where it is wasted. The innovative designs of the MSR Hubba or BA Seedhouse are great, but I really think this more basic modification performs equally as well. I know MSR used to provide the 3-sided stakes with some of their tents and that may be the only thing that is clearly superior to this Alps, which just provides your basic aluminum needle stakes.

The Zepyr 1 is roomier than I expected. Though you couldn't fit 2 sleeping bags side by side but I do think you could sleep two friendly people in here on a dry night. The Zephyr narrows slightly at the feet and leaves plenty of room for one person and some belongings. The vestibule is smaller than expected but should be adequate for a single pack. The Zephyr 1 requires the fly to have two included 12 inch guy wires attached to the bottom of the fly on each side in order to pull the fly from the body. With these in tack the fly did not touch the body anywhere, clearing by an average of about 2 inches. The poles have male fitting on the end and slide through eyelets attached to webbing on each corner. Fly attaches to each corner with adjustable side release buckles. A two piece spreader pole fits in above the door. Alps thoughtfully used a smaller diameter pole for this as it is non load bearing.

My first night in the Zephyr it rained lightly (1/2 of an inch in about 3 hours) and I stayed completely dry. This was in central Florida where humidity is high and condensation occurs every morning. I could feel only the slightest amount of moisture in the cotton teeshirt that was acting as my pillow. There was a bit of water pooling in the triangle created by the intersecting main poles and the spreader bar (maybe 10 mL), but nothing to be concerned about.

In sum, this has surpassed my expectations and it is definitely comparable to the products of the big gear companies. A bit heavier than a Big Agnes Seedhouse SL or a MSR Hubba but cost is 70% and 60% less respectively. I am convinced the price differential is not due to quality or R&D, but is instead due to the advertising campaigns of MSR, The North Face, and even Big Agnes these days. When you buy a Hubba you are paying for 2 page spreads in Outside and Backpacker. I will buy Alps again.

I bought this tent for a recent backpacking trip in the Cohutta Wilderness near the base of the AT. On a 3-day trip, it rained 2.86 inches. Granted, it was a lot of rain, but water came right in through the corners and the base of the doors. My gear was soaked after the first night.

Also, I'm 6'5" tall. The base of this tent is not 7'5" long as depicted. Just like every other tent on the market, I have to sleep diagonal or have my head and feet jut out the ends of the tent.

I just finished sealing all the seams, so I'm willing to give this thing another try. Overall though, I'm a little disappointed.

This tent is good except that it is not a full coverage rainfly. I worked on a trail crew and lived in the state parks in a tent for 2 1/2 months with this particular tent. It rained everyday for a week and the tent definitely leaked through the seams that were not covered with a rainfly. Other than that, the rainfly did do its job for the part of the tent that it did cover. This tent is good if you are not expecting rain.

I bought the 3XTA after having the Eureka Timberline2 for many years. I wanted something bigger than a 2 man and this does the trick. It is great for 2 people but 3 would be cramped if you start bringing in your packs.

Pros - Easy to set up and light weight. No problems for one person to set up and move around before putting the stakes down.

The mesh is really tight and if noseeums are a problem for you, this will stop them.

Having a door on each side allows each person to get in and out without bothering the other.

Cons - Be careful when setting up as the side with the little triangle window (the "!" logo) really needs to be facing towards the lowest grade of incline. We were almost flat but still had the window at the highest grade. It rained the 2nd night and although no rain got in, the rain slides right down the fly and over the window. This then leads to rain running under your tent instead of the ground tarp. Tent was wet between ground tarp but bone dry between ground and tarp. Glad I sealed everything even after factory tape seal.

Also, I miss being able to open a window without having the world look in. If the fly is open (for a breeze) you have no protection from people looking in. And it is either all or nothing to have it open.

Lastly, the fly zipper is really long. To get out, you have to reach all the way across the open ground to grab it. Tough if it rains and there is mud right outside your door. As soon as you open the fly, you will get rain coming into your tent through the mesh. Since the zipper head is at the ground level, it gets mud and dirt on it so it makes it tough to zip up or down.

Overall, I would probably not buy this again. At least not for my purposes. I'll probably buy a 4 season tent and use this as a back up or for the kids. At least the price was really good. Glad I only spent $161 on it.

This is one of the best tents I have purchased for backpacking. It is very light but strong and sturdy. Myself and my brother are both 6 foot 1 and had plenty of room. Setup and takedown is very easy and a quick process. The 2 doors and vestibules are a great addition to this tent. Dont forget to waterproof and seam seal this tent and also place a tarp underneath it and it will last for a very long time. Eureka has done it again!

Pros: Roomy enough for two + gear. Me=6'0" Her=5'2" Like other Eureka tents, very intuitive, easy quick set-up. I hook a Coleman Zephyr LED tent fan/light ($20 at Chinamart) on the ceiling loop. This was a godsend on warm nights (see ventilation comment below). Decent price $160. This tent has seen a good dose of rain and it is watertight. I did seal the factory sealed seams with Kenyon Seam Sealer 3. Wind is also not an issue. I have great confidence in the strength of the aluminum frame.

Cons: Plastic tent stakes...boo! I use MSR Groundhogs-excellent in the hardest ground.MSR Groundhog Stake (Each) Model 312054

Unzipping the fly is a loooonnnng reach even for me (6'0"). Zipper is at the far corner of the vestibule and dew/rain on the fly will get you wet if not careful. Ventilation is inadequate in hot/muggy weather. In warm weather you may want to leave the fly unzipped on BOTH vestibules. The one vent doesn't seem to do much.

I considered the Eureka Pinnacle Pass 2A but I wanted the vestibules for more elbow room inside. Given the lack of ventilation with the 3XTA, I would give serious consideration to the 2A again.

Bought this tent last fall and I love it. Have been backpacking and regular car camping works great for both. I have been in all night rain storms and nights down in the low twenty's the tent has performed well. The three man size is great for two guys and backpacks. The vestibles are probably good for small packs, but not the larger 6500 size. But they are great for leaving your boots in and keeping the tent dry. The ventilation is great and only one side of the interior is actually not covered by the rain fly, this gives complete protection for the other three sides. This allows to to pack gear up against the sides and not get wet. Very lightweight and attaches easily right to my backpack.

Tent sets up easily. The one thing I don't like it that the top half of the tent is mesh. Not sure if I want to take this tent when it is cold.

Also the floor is two pieces and it seems like it is the same fabric as the sides. I don't know how this will do if the ground is wet.

The rainfly is AWESOME!! I was looking for a tent that was reasonably priced with a good rainfly and this is the only tent I could find. When we took the tent camping I was expecting rain and looking forward to seeing how the tent did in wet conditions. Unfortunetly it never rained. I will just have to go again. The rainfly really goes all the way to the ground and does not touch the fabric of the tent. It should do well in the rain.

The tent will fit 3 persons or 4 kids. We had two people and all our gear and there was plenty of room.

"Great Roomy Solo Backpacking Tent!" 2009-12-21

First off, this tent should only be considered for two people if you are A: Intimately related to your tent partner, and B: if you are both under 6'2". I am 6'3" and when I lay straight in the middle of the tent, my toes can easily touch the steeply-sloping roof at the foot of the tent. However, if I angle my body towards the corners, it gives just enough room to where my toes do not touch the fabric. All in all, this is a minor issue, and is just something tall people have to deal with. Other than that minor issue, the tent is extremely well designed and built. The materials seem to be very high quality, as are the stiching/seams, which are all factory taped. It has many features that come on tents that cost over twice as much, such as high quality aluminum poles, double doors/vestibules, all mesh body, multiple guy-out points, and a very compact carry size (if you carry your poles outside of the tent sack, it can be compressed much more than its stated pack size).

The only thing I do think is a necessity with this tent is a footprint, because its floor is basically made of the same material as the fly, and while it is not a weak fly material, it probably can be punctured quite easily by ground material. I cut a footprint out of a cheap Wallyworld tarp, and it fits right in the sack with the rest of the tent, sans poles (I carry those seperate anyways). At the end of the day, this is a fantastic little backpacking tent, and I highly recommend it if you want a solo tent with a little extra room than the average tomb-like solo tents. Took this tent out for the first time last weekend to do some hiking in the Daniel Boone Nat'l Forest with my girlfriend. Setup was very easy, it took maybe 5 minutes or so. Inside was a little cramped for two people, just make sure you're very close with whoever you're sharing the tent with, because you'll pretty much be sleeping elbow to elbow. We were both able to use a sleeping pad with a little bit of overlap in the middle. I'm about 6'1 or so and I did notice that when I laid down on my back my feet would graze the mesh at the end of the tent, not really a big deal though, at least not for me. There was plenty of headroom so I was able to sit up without my head touching mesh.

As far as rain protection goes, I was pretty impressed with this tent. We endured very heavy rain on and off throughout the evening and night. The tent kept us very dry. I only have one complaint, there was one spot where the poles crossed at the top of the tent where the fly seemed to leak a little. I think I may just need to seam seal the entire fly, even though ALPS says you don't have to. But other than that we had no water get in from the sides.

We had two weekend packs(3400 and 4000cu in) with us, with one in each vestibule. It covered these easily with room to spare for our shoes and did a good job of keeping our gear dry too.

Overall, this is a pretty good tent, especially for the price. And I would definitely recommend it, but I would also recommend that you seam seal the fly before taking it out.

"Great value; high quality" 2009-07-11

At the price, this is a great tent. The quality is there and it compares well to tents twice the price for a weight penalty of only a few ounces. I set mine up side-by-side with my friend's $250 REI quarter dome T2. He was impressed, and the only differences I noted on his were reflective guy lines, an included pole splint ($5) and a lighter fly. Plus more footroom on his. However, his fly lacked the little windows on the Alps: I actually used mine to check on another camper who was near my bike in the morning.

Here are the only downsides I can find so far with the Zephyr:

1) The footprint is hard to find. Search for "floor saver."

2) There are partial sleeves so you cannot pitch the footprint/fly and then be sheltered to pitch the rest of the tent. However, you can pitch just footprint (not included) and fly for a light shelter.

3) With the fly door unzipped all the way, water can enter the tent. Just don't unzip all the way if it is raining.

4) The tapered design would leave things tight in the foot area if a second person were present. I plan to just use it solo or with one of my kids.

EDIT: I have now decided that #3 is not bad, as it allows a nice view straight up at the stars when you are laying down with the fly open.

All in all, I was very pleased. I found a deal on a Zephyr 3 and snatched it up without hesitation for the rest of the family, or if I need a tent for two adults.

I just spent my first night out in this tent. My buddy and I were going to leave our rain flys off as the evening was cool and clear, but decided to avoid the hassle of a midnight scramble. At two in the morning the heavens clouded over, opened up, and poured down furiously. I had hoped for a more gentle trial of the Zephyr 2, but...

I woke up completely dry the next morning. I did find a bit of condensation had made its way through the floor under my sleeping pad, where a puddle had formed in a depression in the ground. It was nothing major, and next time I'll be sure not to set up in a hole. This tent is lightweight, coming in under 5 lbs., very easy and quick to set up, and most importantly, weather ready. This is my first introduction to ALPS products and I intend to consider more of their products in the future.

I am a GEARhead. I own or have owned over 30 tents plus all the fixings... Both backpacking as well as car camping. This tent as far as I know did not exist when I rewalked Colin Fletcher's 1000 Mile Summer through California. Had it, I would've of used the 1.5 model. After getting home and settling in from my walk I ran across both the 1.5 and 2. I own both now and can say they both are killer deals in their price range. And yes I own SD, REI, Kelty, Coleman/Exponent, Moss, Slumberjack Bivy (I used) and on and on and on... I have tried many while hiking in the Olympic Mountains in WA. I would put this model(s) up against any listed. If you have money to burn yes there are some that may be better at lasting a little longer but I question that too... and yes you can go lighter in weight... but by going lighter you'll give up a lot of comfort and the security you get knowing that you have a shelter that will handle just about anything Mother nature throws at you. Alps other models I'm not sure of size VS. weight and the value VS. dollars. But this model is absolutely great.

Bought this tent based on some avid campers recommendations.

Very glad that I did! We ended up at the site in a downpour, and after throwing down a small tarp, I had the tent up in 5 minutes in low light in the rain.

NOTE! Make sure the tarp ends are UNDER the edges of the tent! I forgot, and had some small spots of water. Nothing a towel, and a little air circulation didn't cure!

I've used this tent twice so far. The first was a hot night. It provided great ventilation. The second was a very, very, very wet night and I was the only one to remain dry. I did seal the seams and sprayed it with water repellant beforehand. The only problem I had was a little water seeping through the floor, but it was barely enough to mention. It was pretty roomy-I fit myself and all my gear and I'm a pretty big guy. I feel it was a really good buy and was cheaper buying through Amazon than anywhere else I could find it.

We've had our Eureka Timberline tent for about 6 years now, and it's still in good shape. It's easy to set up, and it generally keeps the water out. On very stormy/rainy trips, the inside has gotten slightly damp at the edges, but we were dry on our sleeping pads and in our sleeping bags (and our friends got soaked). The tent is also fairly light, but we haven't really gone backpacking with it. We do mostly car camping, though we did take it on one hike-in camping trip.

I use this for remote camping in the Rocky Mountains and it holds up really well. It stands up to the wind and does a pretty good job of keeping heat in on the cold nights. This tent is very small and can barely accommodate 2 people - and only if they don't plan on keeping any gear in the tent. Don't even think about setting up a cot in here either.

Overall great tent, but lost a star for the thin floor.

Eureka has long supplied the market with good useable tents that represent excellent dollar values. Set up is a breeze. It has shockcorded aluminum poles which, I've learned over the years, are far more durable and superior to fiberglass if the tent is to be used often. This tent withstood several hours of pounding rain with no leakage and appears stable enough to withstand strong wind. Its ventilation is excellent. It doesn't come with the necessary tie offs for the fly, so, some small nylon rope or cord is needed. The tent pegs are designed to be light, but, inadequate to truly anchor the tent under windy conditions or in loose soil, so, larger pegs may be needed. Care should be taken with zippers (any tent) and this tent could benefit from some zippers with larger teeth. There is no way that this is a four person tent, even if the four were children. I bought it for a roomy one person tent; with two adults it would be snug and purchase of the optional vestible would be adviseable. It packs up nicely and is a good choice for car/truck camping and is compact enough to be suitable for motorcycle camping.

As with all items I've ordered through Amazon, delivery was punctual and communication excellent.

This is the second Timberline 4 I have purchased. The first was 6 years ago when my older son (12 y/o) joined Cub Scouts. He has taken that with him to Boy Scouts and it is still a great shape.

This one is for my youngest son (8 y/o). He will use it and bring it with him to Boy Scouts also.

Both of them can put this tent up by themselves, the youngest needs a little help. The older one can put it up in 20 min by himself. The tent is listed as a 4 man but we only use it as a 2 man with gear.

On a recent very rainy trip with his Troop, he was one of the only Scouts who stayed completely dry.

Never had a single problem with the first, looking forward to many years of use out of our second.

A great tent, a great value. Worth every penny.

"Warm and dry!" 2009-10-26

I picked this up for my 10 year old son as his first tent. We took it on a scout camp out this weekend and got to try it out. This tent was easy enough to put up in the rain, though due to the design, the poles require some effort to put through the sleeves. The fly went on in a heartbeat. I was surprised it has taped seams instead of a bathtub floor, but I put a tarp under it and even though we pitched it on wet muddy ground and had some light rain we stayed very dry. The temperature dropped unexpectedly overnight, and I was nicely surprised by how much warmer it was in the tent than outdoors when I opened up the tent to go. We had a heavy hard frost on the outside of the tent, some condensation inside. This tent also took the wind very well, even though the wind took down two other tents near us. Without the fly the ventilation looks good for a hot summer night, with it I think there is very good rain / wind protection. The fly allows for flexible ventilation, as needed, for in-between weather. Lots of pockets to store stuff inside, and plenty of room in the vestibule for boots, etc. True, it is heavy for backpacking, but we plan to use it as a big kid car camping tent. With two people and minimal gear (winter coats, two small backpacks) we were nice and cozy.

I slept in this tent for several days up in the Appalachian Mountains. It was very comfortable and I had no problems with staying dry either from condensation in the morning or from the one day it rained. It was easy to put together, has nice ventilation options and convenient storage pockets etc. I slept in it by myself and had plenty of room. I think it would be a little crowded with two people, but since there are two doors it would definitely be possible. You wouldn't have to crawl over you camping buddy to get out and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

"King water proofing" 2009-08-24

I too waited for actual use before a review. Went to Skinners Falls, Sullivan County, NY this weekend. The setup was relatively easy and the storage nets that come with this tent are more useful than I thought. The best part....We were hit with torrential thunderstorms that did not let up for hours. The rain created a pool in front of this tent roughly 4 inches high (I waded into the tent), even with the mini-moat that was carved around the perimter. This tent did not leak at all! There was some perspiration higher at the seams (about 6 in high) but no leakage at all. There was water sloshing around the outside of the walls but with the nifty "bathtup design", it stood up like a champ. I highly recommend this tent. It is pricey but now you know why.

"Good Ventilation, Amazing waterproofing" 2009-07-20

I wanted to withhold reviewing this item until I really was able to test it. The first few times i used it it was sunny 70 degree days, any tent would be great for that.

Well, this past weekend provided a test from hell. I had to set up the tent by myself for the first time and it took all of 15 minutes total, if that; very straightforward. The day was incredibly hot and I need an afternoon nap, so I put the ventilation system to the test. The four large windows and the small lower vent really moved the air well. Even with the direct sun it was not much warmer in the tent than outside of it. That night the rain came. Flash floods lightning, and wind. It was quite a storm. The entire camping area was underwater. Two sites down from us the people had water to their doors of their car. Luckily we were uphill from them, but not out of the water. We were in about 2" of water, but the tent didn't leak a drop. It felt like we were on a water bed there was so much water under and around the tent, but it held its own and kept us dry. People were amazed that we had no water, they all swore they were ditching their old tents and buying one of these.

All told, this tent is great. Size wise it is great for my family and me, not obnoxiously over-sized and manageable for one person set up, but also big enough inside to stretch out.

I wholeheartedly recommend this Eureka Tent.

Lesson learned; you should always set up a tent before a trip. This tent came with damaged support poles bent at a couple of the ferrels. However, the tent was able to be set up and withstood the stress of three days. It performed flawlessly. The pluses: (a) easy, intuitive set-up, (b) spacious, adjustably-ventilated interior, (c) lots of cleverly located storage "pockets" and (d) durable, well-constructed seams, zippers and materials. The best part of this purchase was the exchange of this tent with a new replacement at no cost to me within a week. I didn't think twice about getting another tent.

This tent is really easy to set up. I set it up by myself in about 10 minutes. I haven't had a chance to test it in a rain storm yet but other than that I think it is a great tent. Make sure you check out Eureka's website for care instructions for your tent because it says that the tent should not be stored in the bag that came with it. I e-mailed the company about this and they said that it should be stored out of the bag someplace like your basement or garage on a shelf or someplace where it will be kept off the ground. I don't understand the reasoning in not storing it in the bag but I do know you should never put a tent away wet.

"Not for old folks" 2009-06-28

Once this tent was up (with the help of a park ranger), it was great. Getting it up all by myself was a nightmare. I'm a 77-year-old woman who travels alone a lot (well, not really ... my dog is always with me), and if there's stuff to be done, I have to do it myself. The main problem with this tent was the flexible, jointed poles. After I assembled the two poles, the first challenge was getting them through the canvas loops. They kept catching at the joints and pretty soon I had a rumpled mess. When I got that straightened out, I had to settle one end of each pole into the receiving hole at one corner of the tent, then go around to the other corner, bend the pole and get the other end in its receiving pole. Easier said than done. The first end kept popping out, leaving me right back where I started. In 30 minutes, I was sweating, yelling bad words, and scaring my dog. I'd made no progress. Mercifully, a ranger came along, and we did the job together. Once the tent was up, it was totally great. However, in the course of my struggles, one of the fiberglass rods split.

I do not have the courage to go through this again. Maybe I could master the process, but I don't want to even try it with a busted tent pole. Old ladies like me should probably stick to RVs and leave tent camping to their grandchildren.

"Tetragon 5 Experience" 2009-12-05

I have now received three of these tents (Bought them for Christmas presents) and slept out in two of them on a 40 degree and a 20 degree night. The length is just enough for me at 6'4". The width is enough for two people and room to store some gear. I like the flexibility of the two small mesh pockets, one at each end which can be easily removed and relocated. I also like the pocketed gear loft which can hang down to use the pockets or be hooked to the roof to serve as a loft. I didn't sleep in the tent in bad weather (our rainy season has turned to snow, anyway) but have treated the tents with a repellent ($5/can - about 1 can/tent at Walmart). I think the staking at each corner and on the front ends of the fly, and on the tie down loops at each corner of the fly will hold this tent down but larger stakes than the included wire stakes may be necessary. I also bought this tent because the weight is just five pounds and you can split it between two hikers. I'm happy with it.

I chose this tent because I was downsizing from a much larger Eureka tent that I had used for years, but was too big for one person. This tent is the perfect size for one, but it would be very tight with two. It is very easy to set up, it literally goes up in minutes. I think it's great for summer camping, because of all the screen. The nights were in the 40's when I used it, and I would not use it in any colder temps, but that's just me. The only minus I give it has to do with the wonderful big screen "windows" that come all the way to the "bathtub" bottom: on my second night out, a thick ground fog came in off the lake. The moisture got everywhere, including onto my sleeping bag. It went right under the sides of the rain fly and into the tent. I had to dry everything out when I got home. I feel this would not have happened if the screen did not come so low to the ground. When packed into its carry bag, it is the size of my yoga mat. Just throw it in the car and go! There are 2 side storage pockets, plus a hammock style multi pocket that hangs overhead, so you can keep all sorts of little things handy. I kept my fleece dry that foggy night by laying it on the overhead pocket. I trust the Eureka brand and am looking forward to camping next season. Also, the inexpensive price is always nice!

This tent was everything I needed on my first backpacking trip... relatively low price, super lightweight, easy to put up with two or even just one person and kept us cool and dry during our 3 night hiking trip in the rainy tropics. Not sure how it would hold up in cold or windy conditions, but was well ventilated and stayed completely dry inside due to the well designed vents/windows and rain fly. Slept two people perfectly with gear, would not use for 3 or more as would be too cramped. Would definitly recommend for a newbie backpacker.

I own this little tent (paid more for it at an outdoors store). Have been very happy with the quality of Eureka tents in the past. The last one I had survived five treks to Canyonlands.

Erected this tent my first day in southeastern Utah, at Kodachrome State Park. A great place to visit, by the way. I waterproofed the seams, as I always do in a new tent. Some kind of front came in, and the wind blew nearly constantly for two days. It was only then I discovered that there are two small windows in the side of this tent which can be tied closed with tabs at their sides. There are no zippers. How much red dirt can be in blown in when those tabs are tied closed? Lots and lots. And if you are not familiar with this particular dirt, it is very fine and very difficult to completely remove (except with a desert high wind).

Though I like everything else about this tent, I will never use it again. And I'll be sure that every opening can be zipped closed in every tent I buy from now on.

My nephew and I bought this tent for a backpacking trip and it did not dissapoint. Not only is it lightweight, but it was plenty roomy for the two of us, and we're not lightweights. I am 5'8" 205lbs. and my nephew is 6'1" 240lbs. It's not unreasonable to suggest that Mom, Dad and two young children could make do with this tent.

It didn't rain on us so I can't speak to that, but the poles were strong, the seams held, the zippers worked and we had no problems for the 2 night, 25 mile hike.

I recommend this tent and would not hesitate to buy it again.
